Music & Nightlife

Experience everything from folklore to modern hip hop in the streets of the Dominican Republic, and dance the night away!

The biggest sensation to come out of the Dominican Republic has been the bachata music and dance, a form of partner dance that has now spread worldwide. However, the Dominican Republic is home to many other music and dance forms due to its rich cultural and diverse influences worldwide.

Music and dance are why you visit the Dominican Republic; you will be amazed at the sheer amount of excellent traditional music you can enjoy. Perico Ripiao, otherwise known as Merengue Típico, is an early folkloric version of merengue that also started here, with roots reaching back to the 1850s and musical influences from the mix of Spanish, Africans, and even German traders to the island.  Perico Ripiao typically combines the tambura drum, a metal scraper called a güira, and the accordion.

Other than this, you can also enjoy the brilliant salsa orchestras of the 1960s through 90s and dance the night away at the husting parts of Puerto Plata.

Another more traditional music form in the Dominican Republic is Palo. Palos is part of the Afro-Dominican culture and is typically played at religious ceremonies. Dominicans use only drums and voice and are a fundamental part of the syncretic Catholicism that has developed on the island, which merges traditional Catholicism with African religions.

As for modern music, Dembow rhythms and reggaetón are undoubtedly popular.  Many significant American reggaetón artists have family roots from the DR, which is especially popular among youth. You’ll be sure to hear it in nightclubs.

So, make sure you pack your dancing shoes when you visit the Dominican Republic. The country is ripe with fantastic nightlife in Santiago, Puerto Plata, Santa Domingo, Cabarete, Samana and Punta Cana. You can enjoy anything from bachata to merengue or even jazz. While the big cities offer exclusive bars and high-quality clubs, the villagers have their dancing rituals that you can indulge in. The Dominican Republic is full of life, and the cities never sleep!
